More ‘Mega’ coming to Mega Millions Oct. 19

11:28 AM

We have big news for players of the multistate jackpot game Mega Millions: Changes to the game will bring new features starting this fall. The original 12 states that started Mega Millions in 2002 approved the changes. North Carolina began selling Mega Millions tickets in 2010.

So, let’s start with something important that’s not changing: Ticket prices. A Mega Millions ticket is still $1 or – if the Megaplier feature is added – $2.

The change that will have the biggest impact is that, in the new game, Mega Millions players will choose from a new set of numbers. The range of numbers for the white balls expands from 1-56 to 1-75. The numbers for the Mega Ball shift from 1-46 to 1-15.

This new universe of numbers means new odds and new prize amounts at every level, with an emphasis on larger jackpots that grow faster and larger second prizes for matching all five white balls.

The odds of winning the jackpot get longer, going from 1 in 175.5 million to 1 in 258.9 million. In return, players who like playing for jackpots will see them start bigger – at $15 million – and grow faster, by at least $5 million every time it rolls.

Matching all five white balls will also become a greater feat of luck in the new game, with the odds growing from 1 in 3.9 million to 1 in 18.5 million. But the prize for doing it on a $1 ticket increases by 400% from $250,000 to $1 million. Plus, the addition of a 5X Megaplier means a match five on a $2 ticket could be worth as much as $5 million!

The Megaplier – ranging from 2X to 5X – will continue to be a $1 add-on but will have even greater potential to boost all non-jackpot prizes in the game. And, with only 15 possible numbers for the Mega Ball, the overall odds of winning a prize improve from 1 in 39.9 to 1 in 14.7. Here are the other details:

- Matching four white balls and the Mega Ball on a $1 ticket will be worth $5,000 – and as much as $25,000 on a $2 Megaplier ticket. The odds of winning will be 1 in 739,688.

- Matching four white balls on a $1 ticket will be worth $500 – and as much as $2,500 on a $2 Megaplier ticket. The odds of winning will be 1 in 52,835.

- Matching three white balls and the Mega Ball on a $1 ticket will be worth $50 – and as much as $250 on a $2 Megaplier ticket. The odds of winning will be 1 in 10,720.

- Matching three white balls on a $1 ticket will be worth $5 – and as much as $25 on a $2 Megaplier ticket. The odds of winning will be 1 in 766.

- Matching two white balls and the Mega Ball on a $1 ticket will be also be worth $5 – and as much as $25 on a $2 Megaplier ticket. The odds of winning will be 1 in 473.

- Matching one white ball and the Mega Ball on a $1 ticket will be worth $2 – and as much as $10 on a $2 Megaplier ticket. The odds of winning will be 1 in 56.

- Matching just the Mega Ball on a $1 ticket will be worth $1 – and as much as $5 on a $2 Megaplier ticket. The odds of winning will be 1 in 21.

To get ready for the new version of the game, a “step-down” on Mega Millions multidraw purchases will begin on Tuesday, July 23. You will only be affected by the step-down if you like to purchase tickets for consecutive drawings.

Here’s how it works. Once the step-down begins, the number of multidraw plays available for purchase will decrease by one for each drawing until tickets for the new game go on sale on Saturday, Oct. 19. On that day, North Carolina Mega Millions players will once again be able to purchase multidraw tickets for as many as 26 upcoming drawings.

If you have questions about the new Mega Millions game or the step-down, please call our player customer service hotline at 877-962-7529.

I actually like it, as not only have the odds of winning any prize improved, but so have the odds of matching the Mega Ball plus at least 1 main number.

@ MIMI45 - Nothing in the story you saw on TV was new information. There are dozens of lotteries across the country that have instant scratch-off tickets for sale, and there is always a time period when tickets have to be picked up for a game that is ending.

i am going too start asking how often do they pick uptickets when the big drawing is gone that man open up a lot of question

why did the state close down all the sweepstakes cafes and still allow the lottery to exist....... i play the lottery so i am not against you guys but i dont think its fair we dont have our choice where to gamble our money..... the state has pretty much said that we can only gamble our money with the state...... the people that worked at the sweepstakes cafes all thought the money spent there went to a good cause as well when they paid their rent or bought food...... i am only asking because i have been wondering the answer to this question since they ended the sweepstakes cafes.......and to play devils advocate they state did say they were doing away with sweepstakes cafes because they preyed on the poor.....

@ PLAYER (JROG1206) - We love having big winners and awarding prizes, but your suggestion doesn't fit with how different state lotteries are able to operate. If you enjoy playing games of chance for a chance to win, we wish you luck!

ncel needs to step up the prize payout percentages, after 7 years, isn't it about time to do that. Many other states lotteries offer much better odds/payouts on their scratch off games and state only 5 game, etc. stop ripping people off and start paying up.

On 7/24/2013 03:49, Lucke-Zone said

@ GORAMS15 - We only want people to play if they're enjoying themselves. Lottery games work the same way no matter where you play them: Most tickets are non-winning tickets; that is what makes it possible for the lottery to serve its purpose: offer fair games, award prizes, and raise money for a good cause.

On 7/24/2013 12:17, gorams15 said

NCEL does not care if you don't play or not the next person that comes and give it a try will take the one that quits. To many non winning tickets in stores in local neighbor hoods. Retailers in these stores are just taking in thats all.

NO, Money is NOT the root of all evil,,, THE LOVE of MONEY is the root of all evil is the correct saying! The odds in cash five of winning any amount has nothing to do with roll over. The odds come from the amount of numbers use as a drawing pool and how many numbers it takes to win. If you have to match one digit out of a hundred, then your odds are 1 in 100. The 575,000 is how many combinations there are in that pool of numbers. If you buy 3 different tickets then you have a 3 in 575,000 chance. Now that's simple math!

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - We don't get involved in politics. Everyone gets to decide whether or not they'd like to play the lottery. Nothing about our name has changed and even if it did, it wouldn't change the fact we've raised more than $2.9 billion for education programs. Lottery beneficiaries are teachers, local school districts, at-risk four-year-olds who attend pre-k, college students who recieve scholarships based on need, and college students who receive financial aid based on need. We appreciate that players and retailers have made it possible for these beneficiary groups to receive support from the lottery.

I moved here 10 months ago from Virginia where I played all the time. I came to understand that it is a GAME OF CHANCE. I brought that attitude with me here to NC. Don't want to take a chance, don't play. It's that simple. You take more of a chance getting a fresh pastry at a roadside gas station. Enjoy the game, hold the complain.

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - To respond to your suggestion that the Mega Millions changes are being hidden from the public, the blog on that topic was posted at 11:28 a.m. on Thursday, July 18 and stayed on the front page of our website and the front page of the Lucke-Zone until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 - in other words, more than two days. The changes don't take effect until October, but we wanted to let our players know sooner. We hope that the information we're sharing with you here gives you greater confidence that when you buy a lottery ticket, you are buying it from an organization that cares about its players and operates openly and fairly for everyone in the state.

On 7/21/2013 11:34, Lucke-Zone said

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - We only censor comments that use vulgar language or are rude toward other players. But we are glad to answer questions players have, even when they are critical of the lottery as yours are. With that said, we don't engage in political debate, because the NCEL doesn't make the law - we follow it. Just so you know, the question of per capita spending by county that was discussed by some traditional media outlets started with an unscientific and inaccurate report published by an organization that openly admits it is opposed to the lottery's existence, hardly an unbiased source of information.

On 7/21/2013 12:52, Player said

Talk about how most money coming into ncel comes from the most poor counties in this state per capita. And you dont see that as wrong. if ppl quit spending money with ncel and put it in the offering plate they'd have many more blessing. the only time i'll play cash 5 is when the jp is more than 575,000. Cause then and only then is it s sound mathmatical proposision. I see yall took this blog off your main page quick. i guess all this bad press is bad for business. but thanks for putting my post up. i'm suprised you didn't hide it from others to read

@ PLAYER (JESSELD) - As we said in our comment above, we know not everyone will like every aspect of every game we have to offer... that's why we try to offer many games to choose from, in the hopes that one or more games have features people like. As for people asking the same familiar questions, we understand why folks have an interest in how the lottery works; they want to know its fair to everyone. So we'll keep talking with everyone, even if we have the same conversation more than once, once in a while ;-)

On 7/20/2013 07:01, Lucke-Zone said

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - We can tell from your original comment and your follow up that you're not happy about the changes to Mega Millions. And we don't expect you or anyone else to be happy with every decision that is made or like the features that come with every game. But you should know that the NCEL is one of many lotteries nationwide, and we have a legal obligation to offer fair games of chance and to responsibly raise money for education. A lottery ticket is an inexpensive form of entertainment and we encourage everyone to play responsibly. The odds of games are published in many places. We live in a free society where everyone gets to make their own choices. On that note, if you want to play our games for fun we hope you'll enjoy them. If you don't, then we still respect your point of view and wish you the best.

Furthermore most of the money coming into ncel comes from the most poor counties in this state per capita. if you even understand what per capita means. and thats fact. you cant get around that and anyone who doesn't see a problem with that has no moral compass. whatever happen to "in the best interest of the ppl of this state".

Really?? spelling and commas!! who cares at least people are participating in the blog. i think people complaining about the new mega millions are expressing their opinion and helps ncel know what people want and don't want. i think maybe a more important thing to complain about would be the fact that people still think the ncel can pull their town out of the hat for a win in their town. (not only if they could would they lose their job but face prison time) to me thats sad!!!

Who do you think you are fooling? NOT ME!!! The only prize any one I know want to win when they play a multistate lottery is the jackpot. The odds of winning that will almost double!!! I can always play other games with MUCH MUCH better odds of winning smaller amounts!!! NO THANKS!!! I will NEVER PLAY AGAIN after the changes.

On 7/20/2013 12:58, Lucke-Zone said

@ PLAYER (ESKIMOPIE) - For Powerball, the odds of winning and the prizes got bigger when the base ticket price went from $1 to $2. With Mega Millions, the prize structure changes in different ways at different levels, but the overall odds of winning improve too - at no extra cost. The NCEL pays out a higher rate in prizes than it did when the lottery started in 2006. If you're not enjoying yourself playing, then we understand and respect your choice to take a break. But please understand that the games are fair to everyone who plays.

On 7/20/2013 12:55, Lucke-Zone said

@ PLAYER (SUGOFWPALM) - Over the past 12 months (going back to July 20, 2012): The Powerball jackpot has been hit 13 times and the Mega Millions jackpot has been hit 16 times. The changes to Mega Millions will likely reduce the number of jackpots hit per year, but they will make the jackpots start bigger, and grow larger, faster. There are lots of difference in taste among lottery players, but the multistate jackpot games are most popular because of the big jackpots. The Mega Millions changes make the game more exciting in terms of the jackpots, and better overall odds of winning a prize, without raising prices. We hope that some of the lottery games we have in North Carolina have features that you like.

On 7/20/2013 12:43, Lucke-Zone said

@ NANA7 - You've answered your own question.. the lottery works the same way now that you live in Murphy as it did when you lived in Manteo... and it works the same way in every other state: It takes a lot of luck to win the lottery, whether you live in the east, west, north, south, or central. No player has an advantage or disadvantage, good luck is a random thing when it comes to winning playing games of chance. We hope you'll continue enjoy playing for fun - and a chance to win!

On 7/20/2013 12:41, Lucke-Zone said

@ PLAYER (KALTMAN65) - While PB & MM are popular mainly due to the interest players have in hitting big jackpots, we recognize that there are many different types of players. If you're interested in winning something instead of the biggest prizes on the planet, there are lots of other games that offer other types of odds & prize combinations. The odds of hitting the Cash 5 jackpot, for example, are 1 in 575,757.

On 7/20/2013 12:38, Lucke-Zone said

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) #3 - All of the lottery's sales and policies are a matter of public record. We are glad for all players to know that, for $1 spent on a lottery ticket, about 60% is paid back to players in prizes, about 29% benefits education, 7% is paid to retailers for selling tickets, and the remaining 4% pays for things like tickets, the computer network that connects the 6,800+ stores statewide, advertising, and operational costs. We thank players and retailers every day for making our games more popular and enabling us to award more in prizes and provide more for education each year since 2006.

On 7/20/2013 12:38, Lucke-Zone said

@ PLAYER (JMPME81) - #1 - As stated in the blog, the NCEL did not make the changes to the Mega Millions game. With that said, while we discussed how the odds of hitting the jackpot get longer, we also pointed out that the overall odds of winning a prize improve. #2 Playing the lottery is an optional form of entertainment. Whether a person has a lot of extra income to spend on having fun or just a little extra income to spend on having fun, a person can play the lottery for the same price as a candy bar or a movie ticket. Each day, we encourage people to play in moderation, on the player hotline, in our advertisements, and you can read it on the blog.

What a joke. so the grand prize odds go from 1 in 175 million to 1 in 259 million. Just a new tactic to steal more money from the poor. thanks ncel. Here's a idea when you talk about how much ppl won playing your games. why don't you say how much they lost for that week. we all know you don't want that getting to the public.

For those of you with the negative comments when it comes to changes to PB and MB. Just stop playing! It's just that simple. If you don't enjoy playing then why play? If you don't think you're going to win, then why not donate your money to charity? Every time I play I expect to win and when I don't then I expect it the next time. When others win, whether in NC or another State, be happy for them. Not everyone is going to win the jackpot (I'm going to win the Jackpot though :)!

It all boils down to LUCK...If its YOUR turn to win then you matter where you live. No one is forcing anyone to play.. Play or don't play... its a choice. I appriciate the lottery because its fun to play and real people can win...from all corners of the state. THANKS NC LOTTERY for all the games and fun chances to win.

Agree with most that this is a ridiculous change. Most players want to win the jackpot and they don't want to win it only if it is $300 mil+. We want better odds to win the biggest prize, not the other way around. And yes, they will mess up Carolina Cash 5 as well in the end. Scratch offs are becoming the only sensible (if any of this is sensible that is) way to play.

@ PLAYER (THARTSOOK) - Well, most people who live in North Carolina live east of you. They don't have any better or worse chance of winning the lottery, though - nobody does. Just ask someone who lives anywhere else if its easy to just walk into a store and hit the jackpot. Bigger places have their proportional share of non-winning tickets, just like anyplace else. Good luck to you! P.S. here's a link you can copy & into your browser for some info about winners from Black Mountain:

And then Nc will mess up the Carolina Cash 5 just like SC did to theirs. Just wait.

@ LUCKLESS - Not quite; the current range of Mega Ball #s are 1-46, but the odds of matching ONLY the Mega Ball are 1 in 75. Why? Because when calculating the odds of matching ONLY the Mega Ball, you have to factor in the likelihood that a player will match one or more of the other numbers :-)

Before the powerball became a 2 dollar ticket,I would let the computer pick my number and I would at least get one or two of the six numbers. After it went to a two dollar ticket, and I do a machine pick I don't even get one of the numbers. So I don't even play the powerball. And one dollar is easier to lose than two dollars.

If there are only 15 numbers in the "megaball", how are the odds 1:21? 15 tickets with a different megaball picked on each would certainly make the odds 1:15.....wouldn`t it??

I stopped playing powerball when price went up and I only once got 3 #'s. now with worse odds on mega I will stop playing that also. Odds are crazy!! I hope they don't change cash 5!
